Indicator strips are intended for the determination of glucose (mmol / l) in human whole blood. They can be used for an approximate assessment of blood glucose levels in diabetic patients, if diabetes is suspected (for example, if there are risk factors), for emergency diagnostics in medical institutions as necessary, and also for self-monitoring. Determination of glucose amount in whole blood makes possible to control the level of glycemia, correct the process of treatment, as well as choose the appropriate diet.
Used in glucometers test strips are plastic rectangular plates impregnated with a special chemical reagent. Before measurements one strip should be inserted into a special socket of the device. The device detects the concentration of glucose in the blood by a more progressive electrochemical method. After the insertion (manually) of a disposable test strip, the current generated by the reaction of the biomaterial and reagents is measured at the input of the device. Based on the test strips series number, the blood sugar indicator is shown on the display. Just a small amount of blood is needed for the analysis. Due to the presence of microcapillaries, it evenly spreads over the strip working area.
When blood gets to the certain place on the plate, the enzymes applied to the surface of the plastic react with it (most manufacturers use glucose oxidase for this purpose). Layer of electrolyte is applied on the surface of the plastic. It reacts with the blood and dissolves, because the blood itself does not conduct electricity well.
Depending on the concentration of glucose, the nature of blood movement changes, and these changes are recorded by the bioanalyzer. Such method of measurement is called electrochemical. Based on the received information the device calculates approximate level of blood or plasma sugar. All the process can take from 7 to 45 seconds. Available to different glucometer models range of glucose level is quite large: from 0 to 55.5 mmol/l.
In the modern world, the method is often used, the result is reliable practically 100% and is developed for domestic analysis of capillary blood for sugar, but can also be used in clinical practice.
Most often, each manufacturer produces its own test strips for its own glucometer (or its line of analyzers). Strips of other brands, as a rule, do not work, but there are also universal test strips for glucometers. All strips are disposable.
Usually, the device is equipped with three types of strips. The control strip is intended for checking the glucometer’ quality when purchasing it. Test strips for analyses are packed in separate individual wrappers. The glucose meter is supplied with another code strip designed to encode the device for a particular number of consumables series.
